A state with championships in every major U.S. team sport

Florida’s championship history is broader than the state’s reputation as a warm-weather market might suggest. Major Florida franchises have won titles in football, basketball, baseball, hockey and soccer. The timing is especially interesting: some of the state’s defining trophies came very early in a franchise’s life, while others arrived after decades of waiting.

This guide counts top-level league championships for the professional teams covered by FloridaTeams. Other trophies — division titles, conference titles, Supporters’ Shields and cup competitions — matter too, but they are kept separate so the comparison stays clear.

NFL: Dolphins and Buccaneers set the standard

The Miami Dolphins won Super Bowls VII and VIII, producing the most famous season in Florida sports history along the way. The 1972 Dolphins remain the NFL’s only team to complete an entire season and postseason undefeated and untied.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also have two Super Bowl championships, won after the 2002 and 2020 seasons. Jacksonville has reached multiple AFC Championship Games but has not won a Super Bowl.

NBA and MLB: Miami owns the state’s titles

The Miami Heat have three NBA championships, from 2006, 2012 and 2013. The Orlando Magic have reached the NBA Finals but have not won the league title.

In baseball, the Marlins won the World Series in 1997 and 2003, both times as a wild-card team. The Rays have reached the World Series twice but are still seeking their first championship. That gives Miami both of Florida’s MLB titles.

NHL: Florida became a modern hockey power

Tampa Bay won the Stanley Cup in 2004 and then went back-to-back in 2020 and 2021. The Florida Panthers followed with championships in 2024 and 2025. In a five-season span from 2020 through 2025, Florida teams won four Stanley Cups — a remarkable concentration for a state once treated as an NHL experiment.

That run also changed the in-state rivalry. Panthers–Lightning games now carry the weight of recent championship history, not simply geographic novelty.

MLS: Inter Miami broke through in 2025

Inter Miami won its first MLS Cup in 2025 after earlier winning the 2023 Leagues Cup and 2024 Supporters’ Shield. Orlando City has not won MLS Cup, but its 2022 U.S. Open Cup is an important trophy in the club’s history.

Because soccer uses multiple competitions, “championships” are less tidy to compare than in the NFL or NBA. FloridaTeams treats MLS Cup as the league championship while recognizing other major trophies separately.
