Florida is not one sports market

Florida looks like a single sports state on a map, but following its teams quickly reveals several distinct sports cultures. South Florida centers on Miami, Broward and Palm Beach counties; Tampa Bay has its own cross-league identity; Orlando anchors Central Florida; and Jacksonville gives Northeast Florida a major-league foothold. That geography explains why “Florida sports” can mean very different teams depending on where a fan lives.

The state currently has eleven major professional clubs across the five leagues covered by FloridaTeams: three NFL teams, two NBA teams, two MLB teams, two NHL teams and two MLS clubs. That mix is unusually broad. A fan can move through almost the entire calendar without leaving the state’s major-league ecosystem.

The 11 major professional teams

NFL: Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars. Florida is one of the few states with three NFL franchises, and each serves a different part of the peninsula.

NBA: Miami Heat and Orlando Magic. The Heat represent South Florida while the Magic give Central Florida its major indoor winter team.

MLB: Miami Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays. The Marlins play in Miami; the Rays are back at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg for the 2026 season after spending 2025 at George M. Steinbrenner Field while the Trop was repaired.

NHL: Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning. Florida’s two hockey clubs have turned the state into an unlikely modern NHL power center, with both franchises winning Stanley Cups in the 2020s.

MLS: Inter Miami CF and Orlando City SC. The clubs give the state a natural in-state soccer rivalry, with Inter Miami now playing at Nu Stadium at Miami Freedom Park in 2026.

How the markets fit together

South Florida has the deepest concentration: the Dolphins, Heat, Marlins, Panthers and Inter Miami all draw from the broader Miami–Fort Lauderdale–West Palm Beach region, even though their venues are spread across Miami, Miami Gardens and Sunrise. Tampa Bay follows a similar multi-city pattern, with the Buccaneers and Lightning in Tampa and the Rays in St. Petersburg.

Orlando’s identity is different. The Magic and Orlando City are both closely tied to the city core, while UCF — covered on FloridaTeams as a college program — adds a major campus sports presence on the east side of the metro. Jacksonville is the least crowded major market, which makes the Jaguars especially central to the city’s sports identity.

Where to start if you are new to Florida sports

If you live in Florida, geography is still the easiest starting point. South Florida fans usually gravitate toward Miami-area teams, Tampa Bay residents have a complete NFL–MLB–NHL trio, Central Florida fans have the Magic and Orlando City, and Northeast Florida has the Jaguars. But Florida’s large transplant population means loyalties rarely follow county lines perfectly.

How this guide is maintained

FloridaTeams uses official team, league, venue and university sources for time-sensitive details, then adds its own statewide organization and commentary.
