Tampa Bay is a regional sports identity, not a single city

The phrase “Tampa Bay” is useful precisely because the market crosses municipal boundaries. The Buccaneers and Lightning play in Tampa, while the Rays play in St. Petersburg. USF is based in Tampa and uses Raymond James Stadium for football through the 2026 season.

For visitors, crossing the bay matters. A Lightning game and a Buccaneers game are both Tampa events; a Rays game is a St. Petersburg event. Build travel plans accordingly.

Buccaneers: two Super Bowl eras

The Buccaneers’ two championships came almost two decades apart and with very different identities. The 2002 team was built around an elite defense; the 2020 team added Tom Brady and won the Super Bowl at Raymond James Stadium.

The franchise anchors fall Sundays in the region and gives Tampa Bay one of Florida’s three NFL identities.

Lightning: the market’s most sustained modern winner

Tampa Bay’s NHL team has three Stanley Cups and reached a new level of national prominence with consecutive championships in 2020 and 2021. Benchmark International Arena’s downtown location also makes Lightning games easy to combine with the Riverwalk and surrounding districts.

The Panthers’ rise has given the Lightning a genuine in-state rival with recent championship credibility.

Rays: back under the Tropicana Field roof

The Rays returned to Tropicana Field in 2026 after playing the 2025 season at Steinbrenner Field while the Trop was repaired following Hurricane Milton. The club’s stadium future has been a recurring regional issue, but the current game-day reality is once again St. Petersburg.

On the field, the Rays have reached two World Series and built a reputation for competing efficiently in the difficult AL East.

USF and the next stadium chapter

USF football plays its final season at Raymond James Stadium in 2026 before the university’s new 35,000-seat on-campus stadium is scheduled to open in 2027. That move should change the feel of Bulls football by shifting game day from an NFL venue to campus.

Together, the four teams make Tampa Bay one of Florida’s most complete sports regions across the calendar.

How this guide is maintained

FloridaTeams uses official team, league, venue and university sources for time-sensitive details, then adds its own statewide organization and commentary.
