South Florida has the state’s densest sports map
No Florida region has more major teams packed into one media market than South Florida. The Miami name is prominent, but the actual geography stretches from Miami and Coral Gables north through Miami Gardens, Fort Lauderdale, Sunrise, Boca Raton and Palm Beach County.
That means a “Miami sports weekend” can involve a lot of driving if you do not check the venue first. The Heat and Marlins are close to central Miami; the Dolphins play in Miami Gardens; the Panthers are in Sunrise; and Inter Miami’s new 2026 home is at Miami Freedom Park near Miami International Airport.
The five major professional teams
Dolphins: the region’s oldest major franchise and the owner of the 1972 Perfect Season.
Heat: three-time NBA champions with a downtown arena and one of the strongest modern organizational identities in basketball.
Marlins: two-time World Series champions whose retractable-roof ballpark sits in Little Havana.
Panthers: based in Sunrise and transformed by back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2024 and 2025.
Inter Miami: MLS Cup champions in 2025 and now playing at Nu Stadium at Miami Freedom Park.
College sports add another layer
The Miami Hurricanes are the region’s most nationally prominent college program, particularly in football. The university is in Coral Gables while football home games are played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
FIU gives Miami a large public-university athletics program inside the city, while FAU in Boca Raton is part of the broader South Florida sports corridor. For college fans, that creates a spectrum from historic national brands to younger regional programs.
How to plan a sports visit
If your event is at Kaseya Center or loanDepot park, staying in central Miami is straightforward. Hard Rock Stadium and Amerant Bank Arena require more regional planning. Nu Stadium is comparatively close to the airport, which can be useful for visitors building a quick trip around a match.
The safest rule is to choose the game first and hotel second. South Florida traffic can erase the apparent convenience of a short map distance, especially on weekday evenings or around major events.
