Why Florida has three NFL teams

Florida’s population is large enough — and geographically spread out enough — to support NFL franchises in South Florida, Tampa Bay and Jacksonville. The result is a rare three-team state where the clubs do not share a division and therefore do not play each other every season.

That separation gives each team a distinct identity. The Dolphins are the historic franchise, the Buccaneers have the state’s most recent Super Bowl, and the Jaguars are deeply tied to Jacksonville because they are the city’s only major team in the traditional four U.S. leagues.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins began play in 1966 and quickly became one of the NFL’s defining teams of the 1970s. Their two Super Bowl championships include the 1972 Perfect Season, a benchmark no later NFL champion has matched.

Their strongest rivalries are divisional: Buffalo, New England and the New York Jets. In-state games against Tampa Bay and Jacksonville are less frequent but carry obvious regional interest.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay entered the NFL in 1976 and endured a famously difficult beginning before eventually building two very different championship teams. The 2002 Buccaneers were defense-led; the 2020 title team, led by Tom Brady at quarterback, won Super Bowl LV in its own home stadium.

The Bucs play in the NFC South, so their regular rivalry cycle is built around Atlanta, Carolina and New Orleans rather than the other Florida teams.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars arrived in 1995 and reached the AFC Championship Game in only their second season. They have not yet played in a Super Bowl, but the franchise has produced several strong playoff runs and remains one of the clearest examples of a team serving an entire regional identity.

Because Jacksonville lacks NBA, MLB and NHL franchises, the Jaguars occupy a different civic position than the Dolphins or Buccaneers. NFL Sundays are the city’s biggest major-league sports stage.

Which Florida NFL team fits you?

Choose Miami if history, South Florida identity and the AFC East are the draw. Choose Tampa Bay if recent championship success and the NFC South appeal more. Choose Jacksonville if you prefer a younger franchise whose identity is unusually intertwined with its city.

For a neutral visitor, venue and travel plans may decide it. Hard Rock Stadium, Raymond James Stadium and EverBank Stadium sit in three very different Florida regions, each with enough around it to build a weekend.
